FFwD: Blueberry Marscapone Roulade

Blueberry Marscapone Roulade

This week’s French Fridays with Dorie was really fun! And even though I didn’t love it quite as much as I wanted to (NEEDS MOAR BLUEBERRY@#!!), I would still make it again and maybe just up the blueberries a bit.

Like most French Friday’s recipes, I chose to halve this one, although it still turned out pretty large. I think maybe I did a bad job of halving my dimensions for my cake (mine was about 8 X 11), probably should have been a bit smaller. Anyway, here are my notes:

1. The blueberries came from our garden, which is pretty awesome.
2. The cake itself was very quick to make. In fact, I came home from lunch, whipped it up, baked it and got it rolled and swaddled into it’s towel and was only about 5 minutes late getting back to work!
3. I think next time, I will put a pinch of salt in the cake batter.
4. Maybe some orange zest in the filling.
5. Leftover blueberry simple syrup will definitely be used for cocktails this weekend. Oh, yes indeed.
6. Completely unrelated, I am in a lamb grilling contest! If you feel so inclined, I would love your vote here: Lamb-O-Pics. I am the 4th entry — Grilled Yogurt-Spiced Leg of Lamb & Pearl Couscous Salad.

Okay, on with the images! And here’s a link to everyone’s posts!

  1. Ohhh. Blueberries in the backyard sounds awesome. Growing up, my grandmother had a blueberry patch – I spent a lot of summers raiding it as a child.
    Lovely cake!

  2. Lucky you with the homegrown blueberries. I added salt and some vanilla to the cake…I was really surprised at the lack of both πŸ™‚

  3. It looks awesome! I also liked it very much and I made two versions!! I am so jealous of your blueberry bush I have to get myself one of those immediately. Do you know if they can grow in a big pot?

  4. Cher: Thank you! It didn’t turn out quite as pretty as I would have liked (smooshed some blueberries), but it was a pretty good summer dessert!
Liz: Yep, I think salt and vanilla (or almond extract) are things that I am definitely adding to the cake next time! πŸ™‚
Maria: Thanks! I’m not exactly sure of a blueberry bush would grow in a big pot but you could always try it! If it’s cold where you are, a big pot would make it possible to take it inside or something during a snowstorm or what-not! I actually bought ours about 3 years ago as an impulse buy at a grocery store and am amazed at how well it’s done!

  5. Wasn’t that syrup amazing! My husband and I had fun whipping up several summer cocktails with it and were pretty darn sad when we ran out.

  6. Blueberries in your garden! I wonder if blueberries will grow in Oklahoma. Your roulade looks delicious. I think its very clever of you to always half the recipes.

  7. I have been trying to grow blueberries for several years…the birds always get them first! Next year, netting!
Your roulade looks wonderful, so glad you enjoyed it! Orange zest in the filling sounds great! Have a wonderful weekend!

  8. I am SO impressed that you grew your own blueberries! We planted beets, carrots, lettuce, okra, and green onions last weekend. We have tomatoes, herbs, and asparagus already – and 8 citrus trees.
I posted another photo from Portland today – I really miss it! I just sent my photo album off to Shutterfly, too.
There must be something wrong with me – I thought this recipe was really difficult. I was frustrated by Dorie saying how easy it was, but I’d never made anything like it before.

  9. Rose: Agreed! Very good! πŸ™‚
Lola: Thanks! I’m not sure about growing blueberries in OK, I am definitely not the gardener in the family! πŸ™‚
Kathu: One year we kept waiting for the berries to get just perfectly ripe…and on that day when we came home from work. hoping to pick he berries, we discovered a bird had ate them all that day. Netting sounds like a great idea!
Susan: Your garden sounds wonderful! πŸ™‚ Love the photo!
    Sara: Thank you! πŸ™‚

  10. Loved the roulade and thought it would be complicated. It wasn’t. Be proud that your blueberries were your own – so maybe there weren’t enough of “your owns” but the fact that you grew them is very, very special. I read your Post too late to vote. Sorry. I will try to keep up.
